Shiv Singh studied in the [East] Punjab College of Arts and later taught art at the Sainik School, Kapurthala. In 1968, he got a scholarship in advanced studies and research in art for three years in Germany.
From 1972 to 1982 he was a member of the Lalit Kala Akademi (National Academy of Art) in New Delhi and he was a founder member of the [East] Punjab Lalit Kala Academy. He also worked closely with Dr. M.S. Randhawa to build the Punjab Arts Council. Till late he was President of [East] Punjab Lalit Kala Academy.
He showed his work in Berlin, Moscow, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland and England.
Shiv Singh received the National Award in Sculpture in 1979 and the President of India’s Silver Plaque for the best exhibit of the year 1982 at the All India Exhibition at New Delhi.
His sculptures are at National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi; Lalit Kala Akademi Delhi; Chandigarh Museum; Panjab University Museum; State Museum, Shimla; Hack Museum, Ludiwigshaften, Glaub Art Museum, Koln (Germany); Punjabi University; Punjab Agriculture University; and also at Punjab [State] Bhawan, Chandigarh.

“Shiv Singh had that craftsmanship in his blood to sculpt wood and welding / moulding his metal sculptures. The skill was further honed in Germany. He was mainly inspired by the knots in the wood that further sharpened his focus to generate the force, strength and movement in the making of his sculptures.”
