He’s a 92 years old shoemaker and works from home. His family migrated from Rajasthan in 70s, built their shop on a roadside space along with others. After nearly 40 years, in 2017, the government cleared them for the illegal acquisition of land and he moved back to his home where he occasionally does his work. His son is still in the profession but works for someone else as they don’t own a shop anymore.

One of his friends who still runs his own shop, when asked about the condition of their work, said,

“Times have changed but the minds haven’t. There’s no respect for handwork, people think it’s an easy job. I have heard all sorts of abuse for not completing an order in a time customer expects, they don’t understand that it takes time, it’s not a magic trick.

Once I had a squabble with a customer, he had a wedding to attend and wanted his pair right then. When I told him it wasn’t possible, the matter got worse and we had to go to a local police station. His sister came and settled everything. She asked me respectfully to make a pair for him. That night I worked till 1 in the morning and completed it. It was a cold night, he remained seated in his comfy car all the time we were working on his piece.”

“But people who are aware of the effort and concentration it takes to do this, respect and pay the desired price and that’s something to be happy about.”
